What a great evening of Music and Songs!

The audience at St Andrew's church, Farnham, on Saturday 20th of April, was treated to a different and wonderfully engaging evening. Beginning with the Hampshire Guitar Orchestra, they enjoyed a diverse programme of captivating music arranged for four sizes of guitar, as well as a wonderful cabaret section with arias performed by Jan Hartley, star of the West End opera and TV.
As musical arranger and director, Derek Hasted of the orchestra introduced each piece they played with wit and musical knowledge, endearing himself and his players to the audience. They heard music from early to pop, from classical to jazz, from stage to film, from Renaissance to reggae, ending with the infectious rhythms of Latin American dances. Producing melodic music of a high standard, the players proved immensely capable and were warmly appreciated by the audience.
Adding to the distinctiveness of this evening was Jan Hartley who showed the admiring audience why she is so rated as a West End star, with 4 arias presented within a cabaret. Her voice is beautiful to listen to, warm toned and absolutely magnificent; a bravura performance. With her fabulous voice and delightful personality, Jan proved undoubtedly a star.
Within a mainly classical set, Jan began with Oh Mio Babbino Caro from Gianni Schicci, then Habanera, from Carmen, Think Of Me from Phantom of the Opera, (Jan performed as Christine for a year in London in Phantom), and finally Nella Fantasia from the film The Mission. As she said: "a brief celebration of the aria through the ages".
Jan was accompanied throughout by Paul Darrah who proved a superbly sensitive player having stepped in at short notice to this demanding role.
The concert was arranged by Performers Together, whose aim is to bring a new performing arts centre to Farnham to benefit the whole community and make the most of the amazing talents within the area Performers Together members include local quires, amateur and professional theatre groups, musicians and opera companies.
